Sierra Sage Golf Course
Before the Washoe County purchased the Stead Golf Course, Sierra Sage Golf Course’s former name; it was used by the military personal that was assigned to the Stead Air Force Base. In 1960, it was built with front nine and in 1970 a back nine was added to it. The links style par 71 18-hole golf course has 3 set of tees with a 6,613 yardage from the longest tee with a slope rating of 122 and a course rating of 70.4.
Sierra Sage Golf Course had undergone a renovation in 2012 to provide golfers the best golf experience. The calcified and plugged conventional pipe was removed and replaced with Evaporative Control Systems “Chambers”. The conventional filter traps caused poor drainage in the course while the chambers improved the previous drainage system which makes the course more playable. The 44 bunkers are also being upgraded with a new sand product. Complying with the USGA specifications, the sand is whiter and a bit heavier to ensure that it will stay in place even in high winds.
The renovation of the course resulted to a great shape and fast greens which makes it more playable. Bent/Poas grass is used for the greens, Bluegrass/Rye for the fairways and Bluegrass for the tees. Although it is a playable course, there are elevation changes to take note as well as water hazards which are found in the four holes. Multi-tiered greens also provide a challenging element in the course.
Golfers can also practice in the bunkered chipping green, two putting greens and all-grass driving range offered in Sierra Sage Golf Course.
